Kimberley Coulson

Kimberley Coulson’s main focus has been on portraiture throughout her time as a university student. Ranging from working with Drag Queens both during performance and in their day to day lives. In a separate project she has also looked into the concept of beauty standards and how different people would deem someone attractive depending on the clothes they wear or how much makeup they have on.

In her most recent project, Kimberley began by looking at 19th century medical photography, as she wanted to once again focus on the body. However, what she discovered within her research was that 19th century photographs of surgeries and physical diseases resemble that of a horror movie. With this in mind, she then moved onto looking at how this could link to the concept of abjection through portraiture. This idea of the grotesque and uncomfortable feeling we get when viewing the innards of a person or a horror film relating to the vulnerability of ourselves opened more doors for the artist.

Kimberley’s project was influenced by a number of artists, for example: Joel Peter Witkin’s Feast of fools, Cindy Sherman’s food, Helen Chadwick’s Enfleshings II and Julia Kristeva's Powers of Horror.
